Hotel Towel Procurement: What to Check Alongside GSM
When two hotel towel quotations show the same GSM, they can still describe different products. A useful purchasing brief looks at the complete towel: dimensions, fabric specification, construction, presentation and performance in the property's own laundry workflow. The aim is a towel that works for guests and for the team turning rooms.
Define the complete bathroom set
List bath towels, hand towels, face towels and bath mats as separate items. State finished dimensions, quantity per room and the appearance you want across the set. If a spa or pool uses another towel, give it its own specification rather than assuming the bathroom choice suits every area.
GSM means grams per square metre: a measure of fabric mass per area. Use it alongside the dimensions and the supplier's fabric details. A larger towel and a smaller towel with the same GSM will not have the same total fabric weight, so compare like-for-like sizes.
Handle the details guests and staff notice
Review the sample's surface, edges, hems and border. Fold it the way housekeeping presents it and place it on the actual rail or shelf. Consider whether the proposed towel size fits the room's storage and whether the set looks consistent.
Ask how the sample relates to the proposed production specification. If colour, branding or construction will change in the order, request confirmation of those differences. A showroom sample is a useful starting point, but the purchasing record needs to identify the item actually being approved.
Involve the laundry before approval
Give the laundry team comparable samples and agree an appropriate trial. Record the washing and drying conditions, the towel's dimensions and the team's observations before and after treatment. Look at handling, appearance and edge integrity rather than using softness at first touch as the only criterion.
